Michael Firman on networking, Evolve & why you should be there
By Michael Firman
With the MEA Evolve conference now only a week away, I’ve started to reflect on why this event has been such an important part of my journey in events and that of many industry professionals that have come before me. It’s not just about the stories and tales of adventure, perhaps the wild shenanigans that might or might not have happened along the way – what happens on tour, stays on tour as they say, so I’m not about to reveal any secrets here.
The real essence of an industry conference such as Evolve is the valuable connections that come from the ability to network and create new relationships. However, networking is not seen as the important and valuable tool that it is when you’re trying to convince your boss that you want to attend a conference to ‘network’. Queue the standard management response of why should the business pay for you to go to a conference, what’s the return their investment? It’s not just the reward for staff to attend because of the personal sacrifices many make in the day-to-day life of the modern event planner. The real focus should be for the personal development and individual growth that comes from networking at an event like Evolve.
Networking at events is highly important and offers several benefits for both individuals and businesses. Events provide an opportunity to meet and connect with people from various industry sectors, backgrounds and expertise. By engaging in conversation and building relationships, you can establish a network of contacts that may be valuable in the future. These relationships can lead to collaborations, partnerships, mentorship opportunities and new business opportunities.
Networking can also open doors to new professional opportunities. You can discover potential clients, customers, suppliers or sponsors who may be interested in your products, services or skills. Attending events allows you to showcase your expertise, learn about industry trends and find new business prospects.
Attending an industry conference such as Evolve can help gain insights and knowledge through keynote speakers, panel discussions and workshops lead by industry experts. Engaging in networking conversations at these events allows you to share knowledge, gain insights and learn from other’s experiences. You can exchange ideas, discuss industry challenges and stay up to date with the latest trends and innovations.
As an extension of knowledge exchange, you can also learn about upcoming opportunities, industry news, best practices or the latest technology. By connecting with individuals who possess different skills and knowledge you can tap into a wealth of information that can benefit your personal and professional growth.
Active networking helps you to establish and enhance your personal brand. By interacting with industry professionals, you can showcase your own expertise, share your own unique insights and establish yourself as a thought leader. This can lead to increased visibility, recognition, and creditability within our industry for you, and the business you represent.
Networking can also provide a platform for finding support, guidance and inspiration from like-minded people. It allows you to connect with people who share similar challenges, aspirations and goals. These connections provide valuable advice, motivation and a support system that can help you overcome obstacles and achieve success.
To make the most of networking at Evolve, it’s important to approach interactions with genuine interest, active listening and a willingness to offer value to others. Building meaningful connections takes time and effort, so make sure when you come away from Evolve that you follow up with any new contacts, maintain a line of communication and nurture those relationships for the long-term benefits they can provide.
Remember, everyone’s experiences and networking techniques are unique and what works for one person may not work for another. So tread your own path and make it fulfilling in a way that reflects the unique person you are.
See you at Evolve!
