Some Q&A with the 2021-2022 MEA Awards Chair of Judges, Simon Baggs
We were delighted when Simon Baggs (Lateral Event Management) accepted our invitation as Chair of Judges in this year's Awards Program. With submissions covering excellent events, suppliers, hosts and the achievements of industry superstars from 2021 to 2022, there really was no-one better suited to become the new leader of our wonderful panel of judges than Simon. As a multi-MEA Award winner, Outstanding Contribution recipient, judge and long-time MEA member, we asked Simon to share a few pieces of his history with the Awards, and for some advice to pass along to everyone currently waiting to find out if they are State Finalists.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I live and breathe events; premium events, theatre, arena tours and business events. The creative process and logistical imperatives give me joy every day. Well, not every day, but almost every day.
What was the very first MEA Award you applied for?
We first applied for an award for our major regional event, L’Étape Australia by Tour de France in the Snowy Mountains. We were thrilled to be a national winner, and the entire Snowy Mountains community celebrated too.
Do you remember the first National Awards Night you attended?
My first MEA conference and awards night were in Alice Springs in 2008. I was hooked and have attended every one since then, except for last year when covid locked me indoors.
You were also an Outstanding Contribution recipient during the 2018 Awards. What did receiving that Award mean to you?
Joining the illustrious list of names of past winners on the trophy was surreal. The warm wave of applause as my name was announced was addictive, I'm still waiting for that to happen again. I might be waiting for some time.
You've been a finalist, a judge, and a winner over the years. You are now the Chair of Judges for 2023. With your experience in every stage of the awards process, what is your advice to people thinking about applying in 2024?
There are awards and awards. Some are run by commercial companies for profit and have little value in terms of industry recognition; they are shelf fillers. The MEA Awards follow a stringent process and are awarded by the country's oldest, largest and most prestigious event association. The judging process is rigorous. That is why a MEA Award is the industry's pinnacle of recognition. It lifts you and your organisation above the competition and attests to your professionalism, creativity and credibility. Aim to have a 2024 MEA Award or two in your business plan.
As a multi-MEA Award Winner yourself, do you have any final advice for those who will be finding out if they are a State Finalist in the coming weeks?
It's easier for Oscar nominees to smile and clap as their name is not read out as the winner; they are actors. We mortals have been hoping and doubting for weeks; then, the moment of truth comes. If you lose, feel free to blame the Chair of Judges. If you win, let all those emotions out and enjoy the moment to the fullest.
